Right-angle drive efficiency – Space-saving design – Smart control compatibility
Automatic sliding gates, industrial rolling shutters, bi-folding doors, and parking barrier arms share a common challenge: the drive unit must fit inside a compact enclosure yet deliver enough torque to move gates weighing up to several tonnes. The worm gear reducer is the transmission of choice, combining 90-degree right-angle drive geometry with self-braking characteristics and an extremely compact envelope. Our worm gearboxes power gate operators across industrial, commercial, and residential applications worldwide.
Industrial Factory Gates
Heavy steel gates 4-12m wide, up to 500 kg, continuous daily cycling
Parking Barrier Arms
Boom arms 3-6m, high-frequency cycling, obstruction sensing
Commercial Sliding Doors
Retractable security grilles, shopfront doors, high-speed roller shutters
The most fundamental advantage of a worm gear drive in gate operator design is its 90-degree right-angle transmission. The drive motor and gearbox output shaft are perpendicular – allowing the motor to be mounted horizontally along the gate length while the output pinion drives the gate rack perpendicularly. This eliminates bevel gear stages that would otherwise be needed with parallel-shaft gearboxes, reducing the operator enclosure size by 30-50%.

Gate duty is classified as intermittent shock load. Apply the following service factors:
Full production quality system; batch records traceable to raw material and inspection certificates.
EU Machinery Directive – required for automatic gate operators sold in EU markets (EN 13241 for industrial doors).
All input flanges conform to IEC standard B5/B14 dimensions – direct-mount to any IEC-frame gate drive motor.
Essential for gate operators mounted on exterior fence posts or in exposed gateway pillars subject to rain and cleaning.
Challenge: 800 cycles/day per barrier; 45 deg C ambient caused oil thinning and seal weeping in previous units.
Result: NMRV compact worm reducers with ISO VG 320 synthetic oil and FKM seals. Zero leakage reported after 18 months.
Challenge: 3-tonne steel fire door required holding force during power outage; no battery backup available.
Result: Cast iron worm gearbox 100:1, IP65, confirmed self-locking. Safety audit passed without auxiliary brake specification.
Challenge: Typhoon winds to 140 km/h required gate drive to hold 800 kg sliding door against wind pressure without clutch slip.
Result: IP65 worm gearbox, self-locking torque verified at 2.5x rated. Gate secure through two consecutive typhoon events.
Challenge: Gate operator required to resist 5 kN forced entry attack torque without back-driving; anti-tamper requirements precluded external brake mechanisms.
Result: 80:1 worm gearbox, self-locking margin verified to 4x rated output. Anti-forced-entry certification obtained without additional locking devices.
Challenge: 400 cycles/day high-speed shutter required compact drive with noise below 65 dB(A) to comply with planning conditions in residential-adjacent location.
Result: NMRV aluminum worm gearbox (20:1) with noise-optimised bronze worm wheel. Measured noise level: 59 dB(A) at 1m – 6 dB below requirement.

Yes – for ratios of 30:1 and above, our worm gearboxes are mechanically self-locking. When motor power is cut mid-travel, the gate stops and holds its position without drifting. For ratios below 20:1, self-locking cannot be guaranteed – in these cases we recommend specifying an electromechanical holding brake on the motor.
NMRV compact aluminum units are designed for up to 500 cycles/day in intermittent duty (S3 40%); cast iron industrial units can handle up to 1,000 cycles/day with adequate thermal margin. For very high-cycle applications above 800 cycles/day, we recommend specifying one frame size larger than the torque rating would otherwise require, to increase heat dissipation area.
Yes – worm gearboxes are fully compatible with DC motors. Battery-backup gate systems commonly use 24V DC motors, which mate to the gearbox via a standard IEC B14 flange or solid shaft coupling. The worm gear self-locking property is particularly valuable in battery-backup scenarios because the gate can be opened and then held in position without continuous battery drain – the motor only draws current during movement, not while holding.
For rack-and-pinion gate drives, the most common output configurations are: (1) a solid output shaft with keyway to which the pinion gear is fitted; or (2) a hollow bore output shaft that slides over the pinion shaft. We also offer output pinion integrated configurations where the pinion tooth form is machined directly onto the gearbox output shaft extension – eliminating the separate pinion component.
Aluminum NMRV units are suitable for gate weights up to approximately 500 kg, cycle rates up to 500/day, and ambient temperatures up to 40 deg C. Cast iron units are recommended for gates above 500 kg, high-cycle industrial applications above 500 cycles/day, or where the gearbox is subject to mechanical impact risk. Cast iron has approximately 3 times the impact resistance of aluminum alloy at equivalent wall thickness.
With correct sizing and PAO synthetic lubricant, our worm gearboxes are designed for a minimum of 500,000 cycles in commercial gate applications. The bronze worm wheel is the wear-limiting component; oil sampling every 12 months is recommended to monitor wear particle levels. Replacement worm wheel and shaft pairs are stocked as service parts with a 10-year availability commitment.
