WPWO Universal Worm Gear Reducer — Multi-Direction Output Mount for Port Equipment, Cranes & Vertical Process Drives
When an industrial drive system requires the output shaft to point in a direction that neither foot-mount nor standard flanged-base gearboxes can accommodate — such as vertical-down for a crane hoist drum, or steep-incline for a ship loader conveyor — the WPWO universal multi-direction mount worm gear reducer delivers the solution. Extending the WPW platform with up to six shaft-direction positions (A–F), the WPWO covers mounting geometries that other universal worm gearboxes cannot reach.
Multi-face oil ports confirm correct gear and bearing lubrication in every supported orientation, and reinforced output shaft bearings handle the combined axial/radial loads inherent in vertical and steep-incline mounting. Available in 12 sizes (40–250 mm), ratios 1/5–1/60. About Ever-power | Request a Layout Consultation

Product Structure — Extended Multi-Direction Housing

The WPWO housing extends the WPW casting to support up to six shaft-direction positions. Reinforced output shaft bearing bores accommodate the combined axial and radial load vectors of non-horizontal orientations. Oil fill ports on multiple housing faces ensure correct lubrication immersion for both the gear mesh and the output shaft bearings in any supported mounting position.
| Shaft Positions | Up to 6 (A–F) including full vertical up, vertical down, and steep incline |
| Bearings | Reinforced output shaft bearings for combined axial/radial vertical loads |
| Oil System | Multi-face ports; correct level documentation for all supported positions |
| Housing | FC25 cast iron; extended body vs WPW for additional bearing support |
| Self-Locking | At ratios ≥1/30 — critical for vertical hoist and crane slewing safety |
| Gear Pair | 20CrMnTi worm (≥58 HRC) + ZCuSn10Pb1 bronze wheel |
✅ Key Features & Benefits
Six Mounting Positions — Beyond Any Standard Gearbox
The WPWO supports up to six shaft-direction configurations, including positions not available from the five-position WPW. Full vertical shaft-down, full vertical shaft-up, and steep-incline positions that standard universal gearboxes cannot accommodate are all within the WPWO’s rated capability. Keywords: multi-direction universal worm reducer, 6-position worm gearbox.
Correct Lubrication in Every Position
Every mounting position in the WPWO range has been verified for correct gear mesh and bearing oil immersion. Multi-face oil ports allow the correct fill level to be established for each rated orientation — a critical engineering requirement absent from standard gearboxes used at non-horizontal angles.
Self-Locking Safety for Cranes & Hoists
At ratios ≥1/30, the WPWO provides static self-locking — preventing gravity reversal of crane loads, hoist drums, or vertical conveyor carriers when the motor is de-energised. This passive safety feature is particularly valuable in vertical mounting configurations where back-driving risk is highest.
Reinforced Vertical Load Bearings
The WPWO output shaft bearings are selected for the combined axial and radial load vectors of vertical and inclined service. This is not an adaptation of horizontal gearbox bearings — the bearing arrangement reflects the actual load geometry of each supported mounting position.
Precision Worm Pair for Smooth Output at Any Angle
Ground worm and bronze wheel to ISO 1328 Grade 7 deliver quiet (≤72 dB(A)), smooth output regardless of mounting orientation — important for crane slewing and positioning applications where jerky output motion is unacceptable.
Compact vs Right-Angle Adapter Alternatives
Using a WPWO in a non-standard orientation avoids the right-angle bevel gear adapter, extended shaft, or separate angle drive that would otherwise be required to redirect a standard gearbox output. The result is a more compact, lighter, and lower-maintenance drive arrangement.
Industry Applications
The WPWO is specified wherever the driven equipment requires an output shaft direction that standard gearboxes cannot accommodate:
Port & Harbour CranesShip loader slewing drives, quay crane hoisting auxiliary drives, and harbour crane slewing mechanism drives where the WPWO output accommodates the specific shaft direction of the crane structural geometry.
Inclined Mine ConveyorsUnderground mine inclined conveyor head drives, inclined ore transfer conveyor systems, and mine hoist slow drives where steep-incline or vertical mounting angles are dictated by the mine shaft or decline geometry.
Marine & Offshore EquipmentShip hatch cover vertical drives, offshore platform deck machinery drives, and marine lifting equipment auxiliaries where compact multi-direction gearboxes must fit within constrained vessel structural spaces.
Water & Wastewater TreatmentVertical clarifier mechanism drives, sedimentation tank rotating rake drives, and rotating biofilm reactor drives requiring vertical or inclined output from the WPWO multi-direction platform.
Construction EquipmentTower crane slewing auxiliaries, construction hoist slow drives, and elevated work platform elevation drives requiring non-horizontal gearbox output in compact structural frames.
Heavy Process EquipmentRotary kiln trunnion drives, large rotating drum drives, and heavy industrial process equipment auxiliary drives requiring specific non-horizontal output shaft orientations.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between WPWO and WPW?
The WPW has five standard shaft-direction positions (A–E). The WPWO has up to six positions (A–F), specifically adding full vertical and very steep incline orientations that the WPW cannot accommodate. The WPWO also has reinforced output shaft bearings for the combined axial/radial loads of vertical service, and its housing body is extended to support these additional positions. The flanged base system (AC, BC, AD, BD dimensions) is shared with the WPW.
How do I set the correct oil level for WPWO vertical installation?
Every WPWO is supplied with a multi-position oil fill instruction sheet specifying the correct fill port and level for each rated mounting position. For vertical shaft-down installation, use the oil fill port on the top face and fill to the level marked for that position. Do NOT use the horizontal fill level for vertical installations — under-filling the vertical position leads to inadequate gear mesh lubrication.
What is the maximum load the WPWO self-locking can hold in vertical orientation?
At ratios of 1/30 and above, the WPWO provides static self-locking that resists back-driving under the rated output torque in any mounting orientation including vertical. As with all worm gear self-locking, this is a passive feature and should not be the sole safety device for safety-critical vertical load holding — always incorporate a dedicated mechanical brake as the primary safety system in crane and hoist applications.
Can the WPWO be used in outdoor marine or coastal environments?
The standard WPWO is rated for covered outdoor environments. For direct marine or coastal installations subject to salt spray, we recommend requesting anti-corrosion coating treatment and stainless steel external hardware. In continuous wet environments (ship deck, offshore platform), Viton seals and marine-grade grease for the input shaft are also recommended — contact us with your environmental specification.
What is the maximum output torque of the WPWO?
At 1500 r/min input, size 250 at ratio 1/60 delivers approximately 2,371 Nm — identical to the WPW equivalent since the gear pair is unchanged. Output torque depends only on input power and ratio, not on mounting orientation. Contact our engineers with your motor power and required ratio for a precise selection calculation.
