A worm gearbox — also known as a worm gear reducer, worm drive gearbox, or worm gear speed reducer — transmits rotational motion between perpendicular, non-intersecting shafts through the meshing of a helical worm with a bronze worm wheel. One of the most valuable properties of a worm gear reducer is its inherent self-locking capability. When the lead angle of the worm is below approximately 6 degrees, friction forces at the mesh prevent the load from back-driving the input — a critical safety feature for lifting equipment, gate actuators, and solar trackers where load holding without a dedicated brake is essential.

RV Series aluminum worm gearbox

The RV worm gearbox is manufactured from high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy, providing an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, natural corrosion resistance, and efficient heat dissipation. Available in frame sizes RV025 through RV150, it accommodates input power from 0.06 kW to 15 kW and delivers output torques from 4 Nm to over 1,500 Nm.

The flange-mount input face accepts IEC standard motor frames directly, while the output is configurable as a solid shaft, hollow shaft with keyway, or hollow shaft with shrink disc — eliminating the need for additional shaft couplings.

Divide motor speed (typically 1,400–1,750 RPM) by required output RPM to find the transmission ratio.
